Google's $2B Data Center Ignites Fort Wayne's Digital Revolution, Fueling Jobs and Clean Energy

Fort Wayne, Indiana - In a groundbreaking announcement, tech giant Google has revealed its plans to establish a $2 billion data center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This significant investment not only solidifies Google's presence in the Midwest but also promises to bring a wave of economic growth and clean energy initiatives to the region. Google's state-of-the-art data center will play a crucial role in supporting the company's cutting-edge AI innovations and rapidly expanding Google Cloud business. The facility will help power popular digital services such as Google Cloud, Workspace (including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and more), Search, and Maps, benefiting individuals and organizations worldwide.

Governor Eric J. Holcomb expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Indiana has made it a strategic priority to cultivate the economy of the future, and we're already seeing the impact of our work thanks to the partnership of companies like Google. These initiatives will help skill up our Hoosier workforce, preparing residents for the jobs of the future while bringing clean energy resources to the region, propelling continued growth in industrial sustainability."

Google's commitment to Fort Wayne extends beyond the data center itself. The company is launching its Skilled Trades and Readiness (STAR) program in collaboration with Ivy Tech Community College. This initiative aims to increase the entry-level pipeline in skilled trades, with a focus on underrepresented communities. Participants in the paid training program will have the opportunity to network and move directly into jobs at Google data center construction sites or other local projects. Furthermore, Google has pledged $250,000 in initial community and programmatic support, benefiting two vital Fort Wayne initiatives: the new Fort Wayne Early Learning Center and Just Neighbors Interfaith Homeless Network, the city's only local emergency housing shelter for families in need.

Google's investment in Fort Wayne goes beyond economic development. The company has formed a collaboration with Indiana Michigan Power Company (I&M) to add clean energy to the local grid. This partnership aligns with Google's ambitious goal to run all its data centers and campuses on carbon-free energy, every hour of every day, by 2030. As a pioneer in computing infrastructure, Google's data centers are already among the most efficient in the world. Steve Baker, President and Chief Operation Officer of Indiana Michigan Power, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, "This project not only helps the Fort Wayne community but also helps advance the State of Indiana's energy policy – Reliability, Resiliency, Stability, Affordability, and Environmental Sustainability, pillars that are foundational to a successful energy future."

Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker celebrated the announcement, declaring, "There's never been a better time to be in Fort Wayne. This investment from Google isn't just about infrastructure or economic development; it's about building a stronger tomorrow, together." John Urbahns, CEO of Greater Fort Wayne Inc., echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the region's exceptional quality of life, competitive business climate, and talented workforce. "This investment from Google is another example that Fort Wayne is the ideal place to do business," he added.

As Google embarks on this transformative journey in Fort Wayne, the city and the surrounding region are poised for a new era of growth, innovation, and sustainability. With the tech giant's commitment to community development, clean energy, and economic prosperity, Fort Wayne is set to become a shining example of what can be achieved when visionary companies and forward-thinking communities join forces.
